The Chief Executive Officer of SLOT Systems Limited, Nnamdi Ezeigbo, has said that an estimated 10% of Nigerians who purchase smartphones end up with damaged or broken screens within a year.
The SLOT MD stated this while signing a partnership with insurtech platform Cube Cover to launch “Super Fix,” a smartphone protection service designed to help consumers manage the increasing cost of device repairs.
Ezeigbo highlighted the growing challenge Nigerian for consumers are currently facing, noting that cost of screen repairs has risen to between 20% to 30% of the cost of phones.
Speaking during the partnership signing the SLOT MD said screen damage remains one of the most common problems experienced by smartphone owners.
According to Ezeigbo, the financial impact of screen damage has become more severe as replacement parts become increasingly expensive.
He noted that the rising costs have been exacerbated by recent foreign exchange reforms, which have increased the landing cost of imported Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) smartphone parts.
Also speaking on the partnership, Co-founder of Cube Cover, Deji Macaulay, said the company is using digital technology to simplify access to device protection.
According to the firms, a customer who pays an annual premium of N30,000 to protect a premium smartphone valued between N2 million and N3 million can access up to N300,000 in repair coverage during the policy year.
If the total cost of a repair falls below the coverage limit, the remaining balance can be used for future repairs within the same period.
The companies said onboarding, policy management, and claims tracking are handled through the Cube Cover mobile application, while a mandatory waiting period has been introduced to prevent fraudulent claims and discourage users from purchasing protection after a device has already been damaged.
According to market surveys referenced by the partners, as many as 64% of consumers indicate they intend to repair damaged screens immediately, but only 11% eventually proceed with certified repairs due to financial constraints.
As a result, many continue using cracked devices or seek cheaper repairs from unauthorized technicians who often use substandard components that may cause further damage to smartphones over time.
