Leicester City have been relegated to EFL League One, completing a dramatic fall just 10 years after their historic Premier League title victory.
The Foxes’ drop was confirmed following a 2-2 draw against Hull City, sealing their place in the third tier for the first time in over a decade.
From champions to relegation
Leicester’s decline marks a big contrast to their 2016 title-winning campaign, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest underdog stories.
The club also lifted the FA Cup in 2021 under Brendan Rodgers and reached the latter stages of European competition, suggesting sustained progress at the time.
However, Rodgers later warned that expectations needed to be adjusted, stating the club should focus on reaching “40 points” after a poor start to the 2022-23 season. That campaign ended in relegation from the top flight, signalling the start of a deeper structural decline.
Off the pitch, the death of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and the financial impact on King Power disrupted long-term planning and investment.
Instability and costly decisions
Since 2023, Leicester have cycled through multiple managers, including Dean Smith, Enzo Maresca, Steve Cooper and Ruud van Nistelrooy, with little continuity in playing style or recruitment strategy.
Although Maresca guided the club to the Championship title in 2024, the momentum was not sustained. Further managerial changes, including the appointments of Marti Cifuentes and Gary Rowett, failed to halt the slide.
A six-point deduction for breaching EFL financial rules in February further compounded their struggles, leaving the club battling near the relegation zone.
