2026 JAMB: 5 Alternative Admission Options for Low UTME Scorers

Candidates who performed below expectations in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), still have multiple academic pathways to secure admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, as several structured programmes now serve as alternative routes into degree studies.

These options provide second chances for candidates with low JAMB scores and, in many cases, lead directly to full-time university admission through foundational or bridging programmes.

Below are alternative admission routes for candidates with low UTME score:

1. Diploma Programmes

Diploma programmes remain one of the most common entry alternatives for admission seekers. Typically running for about two years, they focus on practical and foundational training in disciplines such as Business Administration, Mass Communication, Engineering, and related fields.

Offered by many universities and polytechnics across the country, successful completion often strengthens candidates’ chances of progressing into degree programmes.

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme is a one-year advanced academic pathway that allows successful candidates to gain Direct Entry admission into 200 level in participating universities.

The programme does not require UTME for admission into partner institutions once candidates complete and pass the prescribed examinations, making it a preferred route for many admission seekers.

3. Pre-degree/Remedial Programmes

Pre-degree or remedial programmes usually run between six and twelve months and are designed to bridge academic gaps for candidates who fall short of admission requirements.

These programmes help improve students’ academic standing ahead of the next admission cycle, with some institutions reserving degree slots for high-performing candidates at the end of the programme.

They also provide early exposure to university-level academic structure and expectations.

4. Part-time and Weekend Degree Programmes

Part-time and weekend degree programmes offer flexible academic schedules, particularly suitable for working-class individuals or candidates seeking less rigid study structures.

In many cases, admission does not depend heavily on JAMB scores, and some institutions may not require UTME at all.

TVC News Online had reported that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the first batch of results for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with candidates currently limited to checking their scores via SMS.

In a statement issued last Friday, the board’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the printing of official result slips has not yet been enabled and will be made available at a later date.

According to the board, candidates who sat for the examination on Thursday, April 16, can only access their scores for now using the approved SMS channels.

JAMB also warned candidates against falsifying or manipulating their results, stressing that altering official score notifications is a criminal offence.

“Candidates are strongly cautioned against manipulating the SMS received from the official platform (55019/66019) to fabricate or alter scores with the intent to mislead others, including parents. Such actions constitute a serious criminal offence,” Benjamin said.
