The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the biggest football tournament ever, bringing together more teams, more matches and more fans than any previous edition.
Scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, the tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Biggest World Cup in History
For the first time, 48 countries will participate in the tournament, an increase from the 32 teams that competed in previous editions.
The expansion means more nations will have the opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage and more matches will be played throughout the competition.
A total of 104 matches will be played, compared to 64 matches in the previous format.
Three Host Nations
The tournament will be hosted across three countries:

SolaceBase reports that this is the first World Cup to be hosted by three nations simultaneously and the first time Canada will host men’s World Cup matches.
New Tournament Format
The 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each.
The top two teams from every group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage. This means 32 teams will reach the Round of 32 before progressing to the traditional elimination rounds.
More Places for Africa
Africa will have a record number of representatives at the tournament. The continent has been allocated nine automatic qualification spots, with the possibility of an additional place through intercontinental playoffs.
This gives African nations a greater chance of making history after the impressive performances of African teams in recent World Cups.
