Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, has named his former Commissioner for Works, Mustapha Gubio, as his preferred successor.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the development became known after the governor’s spokesman, Malam Dauda Iliya, confirmed to Daily Trust on Tuesday that Gubio recently met with Zulum shortly after obtaining his nomination form in Abuja.
He said, “Yes, Gubio is the anointed candidate of His Excellency who visited him shortly after the purchase of nomination form in Abuja.”
The endorsement also followed the circulation of a photo showing Gubio presenting his expression of interest and nomination forms to the governor. The meeting included Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, alongside other supporters.
In other news, there are strong indications that Oyo residents may have to wait a little longer to know the governorship candidate that Governor Seyi Makinde will support ahead of the 2027 election.
The governor said he would unveil his preferred candidate before the end of the first week of May, as political activities intensify across the state.
Makinde disclosed that wide-ranging consultations are currently ongoing, involving elders, religious leaders, and other critical stakeholders.
According to him, the process has already produced a number of frontrunners, but no final decision has been made.
