The Enugu East Senatorial Zone on Saturday declared its support for the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was announced during a solidarity rally tagged “Ofu Obi Rally for Tinubu and Mbah”, held at Okpara Square in Enugu.
The senatorial district, which comprises Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East, and Nkanu West Local Government Areas, also contributed N300 million to support Governor Mbah’s re-election campaign.
The motion backing President Tinubu for a second term was moved by Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District, and seconded by Nnolim Nnaji, who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency.
In a similar development, the motion endorsing Governor Mbah for a second term was moved by Iloabuchi Aniagu, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly representing Nkanu West, and seconded by Anthony Mbah of Nkanu East Constituency.
Speaking at the event, former Senate President Ken Nnamani described Governor Mbah as a visionary leader with strong implementation capacity, noting that development is driven by effective leadership and investment in education. He also commended the governor’s Smart Green Schools initiative and urged continued public support for his administration.
Former Governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, also declared support for Mbah’s re-election, insisting that the governor should be allowed to complete another term to consolidate his achievements.
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the state executive council and political appointees remain solidly behind the governor, adding that the rally reflected only a fraction of the widespread support he enjoys.
On behalf of federal lawmakers from the zone, Nnaji said the endorsement was based on performance, not sentiment, urging citizens to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Chief Okey Ogbodo, called for unity among stakeholders, urging supporters to remain peaceful and committed to translating their backing into electoral victory.
Governor Peter Mbah, in his response, expressed appreciation for the endorsement, describing it as a strong vote of confidence in his administration. He reiterated his commitment to transforming Enugu State through ongoing reforms in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and transportation.
Mbah highlighted key achievements including Smart Green Schools, primary healthcare reforms, modern transport projects, CNG bus deployment, and the revitalisation of public facilities. He also announced plans to introduce a free school feeding programme in public schools by September 2026.
The rally featured cultural performances from the six local government areas that make up the senatorial zone.
