….says APC internal rifts, address Nigerians’ hardship must be addressed —
Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila has congratulated Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari on his appointment as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council, urging the council to prioritise citizens’ economic realities, grassroots engagement and internal party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Kawu, who represents Kano South Senatorial District in the National Assembly and is the APC senatorial candidate for the district, said the success of the campaign would depend largely on the ability of the party to reconnect with Nigerians, particularly those grappling with economic and socio-economic challenges.
The senator made the remarks in a goodwill message and strategic advisory addressed to Yari and members of the Presidential Campaign Council following their appointments.
He described the appointments as a reflection of the confidence reposed in Yari and other members of the council by the party leadership, expressing optimism that their experience and leadership capacity would contribute to the APC’s success at the polls.
“As an APC Senatorial candidate running on the same ballot and alongside the President, representing the 16 local government areas of Kano South, I recognise the magnitude of the task before us,” Mr Kawu said.
He, however, stressed that beyond celebrating the appointments, the campaign council must confront critical strategic issues capable of determining the party’s electoral fortunes.
According to him, the first priority should be empathy and responsiveness to the economic realities confronting Nigerians.
Mr Kawu urged the campaign to approach citizens with “deep empathy, active listening and genuine sensitivity” to the economic difficulties facing families across the country.
He said the campaign should demonstrate that the APC leadership understands the challenges being experienced by ordinary Nigerians and is committed to providing meaningful solutions and relief.
The senator also called for renewed grassroots engagement, warning that a disconnect between political leaders and the electorate could create misconceptions and misunderstandings capable of undermining both the President and the party.
He said the APC campaign must establish stronger channels of communication with constituents at the grassroots, adding that political mobilisation should go beyond rallies and election-season activities.
Mr Kawu further urged the campaign council to ensure strict adherence to the Constitution and Electoral Act in all its activities.
According to him, compliance with electoral laws would strengthen the legitimacy of the campaign and enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
“Our campaign activities must strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Constitution, ensuring our efforts are rooted in legitimacy and public trust,” he said.
The Kano South senator also urged the council to develop an effective communication strategy for articulating the policies, programmes and vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
He said the campaign council should leverage the expertise of its members to explain the administration’s agenda in a manner that would enable Nigerians to understand its objectives and expected impact.
“We must leverage our collective expertise to clearly convey the President’s key policies, programmes and strategic vision so the public fully recognises his commitment to national progress,” he said.
Mr Kawu identified internal cohesion as another critical factor that would determine the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections.
He called on the campaign council and party leaders to work towards healing internal divisions and carrying all stakeholders along, arguing that electoral victory would be difficult without unity across the party structure.
“Victory depends on complete solidarity. We must heal internal rifts, set aside differences, and ensure that all key stakeholders, party leaders and members at every level are fully carried along as equal partners in this mission,” he said.
The senator expressed confidence in Yari’s ability to lead the campaign council, while praying for the success of the APC and a peaceful electoral process.
“I trust in your leadership and capacity to steer our party to victory. May Almighty Allah grant us success and ensure a peaceful, seamless process,” Mr Kawu said.
Mr Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State and former chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, was recently appointed Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, with other senior party figures named into key positions.
The development comes as the APC begins preparations for the 2027 general elections and seeks to consolidate its political structure across the country.
