Five governorship aspirants vying for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in Kwara State, have agreed to adopt and support a consensus candidate for the 2027 election.
Naijaonpoint understands that the aspirants agreed to work together and support a single person after a series of meetings convened by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
According to Punch, the aspirants have signed a letter of agreement resolving to prioritise the party’s overall success above personal ambitions.
“We, the undersigned members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State who have expressed interest in contesting the party’s gubernatorial ticket for the 2027 election… hereby resolve that the overall interest of the party and its success are more important than our individual ambitions.”
“In order to avoid unnecessary division, conserve time and resources, strengthen party unity, and enter the campaign season as one cohesive team, we have agreed to recommend a consensus arrangement for the selection of the party’s gubernatorial candidate.”
“We jointly affirm our commitment to accept the decision of the party leadership, and we pledge our full support to whoever emerges as the party’s gubernatorial flagbearer,” the letter read.
The letter further disclosed that consultations had already commenced with supporters across the state.
Naijaonpoint understands that aspirants who signed the letter of agreement were Ali Ahmad, Omar Bolaji Gambari, Ladi Hassan Athavs, Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN), and Kale Kawu.
They all agreed to work together with their supporters in supporting whoever emerges as the PDP flagbearer.
Confirming the document’s authenticity, the party’s spokesperson, Olusegun Adewara, described it as genuine, signalling official recognition of the consensus push within the Kwara PDP.
