The Board of Trustees, BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party has formally assumed control of the party’s affairs following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified its National Working Committee.
BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, made this known on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the opening of the party’s 84th BoT meeting, saying the move was necessary to prevent a vacuum after the court decision.
The development comes on the heels of the April 30 ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which voided the 2025 national convention that produced the party’s National Working Committee led by Kabiru Turaki.
According to Wabara, the BoT stepped in immediately in line with the party’s constitution to stabilise its structure.
“Our immediate intervention averted a leadership vacuum in the aftermath of the judgment,” he said.
He noted that the ruling also upheld the suspension of key organisers of the disputed convention held in Abuja, effectively invalidating the exercise and its outcome.
Despite the setback, Wabara said the party remains confident of overcoming its internal challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He disclosed that the PDP has continued to receive support from members and stakeholders across the country, describing it as a sign of sustained public confidence in the party.
“These messages strengthen our resolve to overcome the hurdles and lead the charge to rescue our nation,” he added.
The BoT chairman also commended members of the dissolved National Working Committee for what he described as their service and commitment during their time in office.
He recalled that the party had earlier approved timelines and processes for its convention through its National Executive Committee meetings, noting that the plans were communicated to relevant authorities before the legal challenges emerged.
Wabara maintained that the PDP is now focused on rebuilding its internal structure and repositioning itself ahead of future elections.
