Bashir El-Rufai, son of Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has signaled that the North should refrain from presenting a presidential candidate in the 2027 election, advocating instead for the South to complete the remaining four years of the presidency.
In a tweet today, El-Rufai shared his personal view on Nigeria’s political future, implying that the South should take the reins for the next presidential term, with a potential alliance between ADC bigwigs, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
El-Rufai’s statement suggested that such an alliance, built on “clear-cut responsibilities,” could steer the country through its current challenges.
“Let the South complete their remaining four years,” El-Rufai wrote, indicating that he believes the North should focus on leadership after 2027. His message points to the idea that Northern political figures should defer their ambitions for the upcoming election, allowing the South to lead in the interim.
El-Rufai further noted that the path to the presidency for any Northern candidate would remain open in 2031, after the South has had its turn. “At 2031, whichever Northerner feels compelled to run, that path would be clear,” he said, subtly reinforcing his position that the next presidential cycle should be led by a Southern candidate.
