Bandits have killed at least 26 farmers in an attack on farmlands in Sauna District, Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Residents said the victims were attacked while working on their farms on Thursday morning, with the assailants reportedly arriving on motorcycles and opening fire on farmers in the area.
“Many others are still reported missing. The attackers came in groups and shot at farmers without warning,” a community source said.
The remains of the 23 victims were later buried in a mass burial at the palace of the District Head of Sauna on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

The Zamfara State Government has expressed sadness following the killing of 26 people by bandits in Sauna town, Marafa Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The Deputy Governor of the State, Mani Malam Mummuni, expressed the feelings while on a condolence visit representing Governor Dauda Lawal Dare in the town.
Mummuni said Governor Dare asked the residents of the area and all of Zamfara State to be patient, and promised to continue fighting the terrorists across the state in order to restore peace.
“The Governor asked me to tell you to be more patient. It’s not just you — he is aware of what everyone across Zamfara is going through.”
He also added that there will be no talks with terrorists, saying negotiations only happen between people who are not deceitful.
“By God’s grace we will deal with them, but there will be no talks because it is deception, it is lies and it is terrorism.”
