At least 27 people have died following a cholera outbreak that has affected six Local Government Areas in Borno State.
The Borno State government reported a total of 2,715 suspected cases of the disease within the first 24 days of May 2026.
An epidemiological report released by the state shows the affected LGAs as Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri.
According to the report, Jere LGA recorded the highest number of cases with 834, followed by Mafa (159), Konduga (95), Monguno (56), Ngala (2), and Magumeri (1).
The outbreak has spread across 29 wards and 124 communities in the state.
The Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) remains the epicentre, with 1,568 suspected cases — accounting for more than half of the total infections recorded so far. Health officials described the situation as rapidly escalating.
State officials warned that the actual number of cases could be higher, as data from some Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs) and Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs) are yet to be fully captured.
Health workers in Borno have expressed concern over the rapid spread of the disease, citing the government’s delay in declaring a public health emergency and rolling out a large-scale public awareness campaign.
