Three Indian nationals are reported missing after a missile strike hit the commercial vessel Settebello near the coast of Oman, while 21 other Indian crew members have been rescued, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security of commercial shipping routes in the Gulf region amid ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Vessel Hit by Missile Near Strait of Hormuz
According to reports, the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello sent out a distress call after its engine room was struck by a missile while operating off Sohar in the Gulf of Oman. The attack reportedly caused a fire onboard the vessel.
Sohar is located near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. Reports indicated that the vessel was carrying 24 Indian crew members at the time of the attack.
The MEA confirmed that 21 Indians have been rescued so far, while efforts are continuing to locate the three missing crew members.
One Casualty Reported, Investigation Underway
Media reports citing maritime security agencies said that at least one person may have died in the attack. However, authorities have not yet released complete details regarding casualties.
The exact circumstances of the missile strike remain unclear. While no group or country has officially claimed responsibility, maritime security experts are examining the incident. Reports quoting security analysts suggested that the attack could be linked to the wider conflict and military activities currently affecting the region.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the source of the strike and assess the full extent of the damage caused to the vessel.
India Calls for Immediate De-escalation
Condemning the attack, the MEA expressed concern over the growing number of incidents targeting commercial shipping in the region.
The ministry said such attacks are a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and stressed the need for immediate de-escalation. India also called for a diplomatic solution to restore peace and stability in the region.
The MEA emphasized that commercial ships and civilian infrastructure should not be targeted under any circumstances. It urged all parties to ensure free and safe navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.
Another Vessel Incident Reported Earlier
The attack on Settebello comes just a day after another Palau-flagged vessel, MT Marivex, carrying 24 Indian crew members, was reportedly hit by a projectile near the Omani coast. The crew of that vessel was safely evacuated after a fire broke out onboard, highlighting growing risks to maritime traffic in the Gulf region.
