Hails His Enduring Legacy in Nigeria’s Democratic Journey

The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has congratulated former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, on the occasion of his 84th birthday, describing him as one of the most consequential figures in Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a statesman whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
In a congratulatory message issued on Saturday, AANI President, Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor, mni, on behalf of the National Executive Committee and the entire AANI family, paid glowing tribute to the elder statesman for his decades of service to Nigeria and humanity.
According to Okafor, General Abubakar occupies a unique place in Nigeria’s history, having risen through the ranks of the military following his enlistment in the Nigerian Air Force in 1963 and subsequent transfer to the Nigerian Army in 1966.
The association noted that throughout his military career, the former Head of State distinguished himself through discipline, professionalism and patriotism, serving in several strategic capacities, including leading Nigeria’s contingent to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and later serving as Chief of Defence Staff.
AANI, however, stated that General Abubakar’s greatest contribution to Nigeria came during his brief but historic tenure as Head of State between June 1998 and May 1999.
“Yet it is what he did at the summit of power that forever consecrated his name in Nigeria’s history. When fate placed the destiny of an entire nation in his hands on June 9, 1998, General Abubakar did not falter, nor did he yield to the temptations of power,” the association stated.
The body recalled that within eleven months in office, he released political prisoners, oversaw the transition process that produced the 1999 Constitution and peacefully handed over power to a democratically elected civilian administration on May 29, 1999, bringing an end to prolonged military rule and ushering in the Fourth Republic.
The association further commended his post-retirement contributions to national and regional peacebuilding.
According to AANI, “Since leaving office, General Abubakar has never truly rested from service. As Chairman of the National Peace Committee, he has stood watch over Nigeria’s electoral processes, lending his moral authority to the cause of peaceful democracy.”
The association also highlighted his role as a peace mediator within West Africa and his contributions to conflict resolution efforts across the continent.
AANI described the former Head of State as “an exceptional elder statesman, patriot and peacemaker of the highest order,” and prayed for continued good health, peace and fulfilment in the years ahead.
