Police officers captured in a viral video molesting a student of the Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) have been arrested and disarmed.
This was disclosed by Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force in a post on X.
Recall that a student of the university, @BuddyJnrrr had alleged that he was molested by the officers after they inquired about the source of his three phones.
According to Buddy, the officers harassed him, his brother and some other passengers travelling in a commercial vehicle on Saturday, May 9.
“They ordered me to step down, which I peacefully did. Immediately, they collected another passenger’s phone and began interrogating him aggressively about what he does for a living.
“Moments later, one of them turned to me and asked why I was using 3 phones. I calmly explained to them that I am a student and that the phones were bought with my hard-earned money. Instead of listening, they dragged me, my brother, and another passenger into a nearby bush and started harassing us for absolutely no reason.
“Before we knew what was happening, more officers joined them and they began beating us mercilessly like criminals, even though we were just students who came to ABSU to study and build our future,” Buddy said.
The student who shared a clip of the incident stated that he and his brother sustained various degrees of injury while the officers also threatened to kill them.
Reacting to the video on X, the Police CRU said, “Alleged officers from Uturu Division have been identified, disarmed & detained.”
Also, reacting to the viral video, the Abia State Police Command said the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, has ordered an investigation of the erring officers at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for appropriate administrative action.
The spokesperson for the command, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, in a statement said, “The public will be duly updated on the outcome of the police action accordingly.
“The Commissioner of Police reiterates the Command’s firm commitment to professionalism, discipline and civility to the members of the public while discharging her lawful duties,” Chinaka said.
She also noted that the CP has warned that all forms of impunity and misconduct by police officers will not be tolerated by the command.
