A 32-year-old man named Israel Friday was ordered by an Abuja High Court on Wednesday to be placed under detention at a correctional facility for allegedly stabbing his neighbor.
Friday was charged with attempted culpable homicide by the police.
The prosecution’s attorney, Donatus Abah, protested that the defendant would endanger the victim, and trial judge Justice M. S. Idris issued the order.
After hearing arguments from the parties, Justice Idris postponed the trial and bail decision until May 13.
Friday, who resides in Angwan Tiv, zone 7, stabbed his neighbor Theophilus Edache during a fight, according to what Abah testified in court.
According to Abah, Edache suffered severe injuries from the stabbing and had to have his left hand amputated.
According to him, the crime violated sections 229(1) and 248 of the Penal Code.
On the other hand, the defendant entered a not guilty plea.
Noah Abdul, the defendant’s attorney, pleaded with the judge to grant his client liberal bail.
He claimed that since the crime is not capital, bail is appropriate.
Abah objected to the bail request and informed the court that he had submitted a counter-affidavit with the victim’s dismembered limb attached.
“The victim could protect himself from the defendant when he had both hands.” Now that he’s exposed, what will happen?
“There is every possibility that the defendant will take the victim’s life if he is released on bail,” he contended.
He pleaded with the judge to reject the bail request.
