The national leadership of the Accord Party (A) has said it will not field a governorship candidate in Abia State in the 2027 elections.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the party also directed its executive and members in the state to work for the re-election of Governor Alex Otti.
The National Chairman of the party, Prof. Christopher Imumolen, and the National Secretary, Mukhtar Abdullah Djungo, announced the decision on Wednesday during a visit to Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.
Imumolen said the party decided to support Otti because of his performance in office.
He said opposition parties should not only exist to criticise the government but should also acknowledge good governance where it is evident.
According to him, Otti’s achievements in Abia State had earned him the support of the Accord Party’s national leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the party, Djungo assured the governor that Accord would not present any candidate against him in 2027.
He said, “On behalf of our party, I want to assure your Excellency that no candidate from our party will be contesting for the Governorship position in Abia State.
“The National Working Committee has directed the State Executive of the party to join hands with the Labour Party and work for the good of the people of Abia State. Let the good work continue.”
Responding, Otti thanked the Accord Party national leadership and its National Working Committee for their support and understanding.
He said his administration would continue to work with people and groups committed to the welfare and security of Abia residents.
“The whole essence of politics is about the welfare of our people and security of our people,” Otti said.
