Senate President Godswill Akpabio has mocked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the recent wave of defections.
Reading the defection letters of some members of the ADC at the Red Chamber, Akpabio stated that they were an indication that the party was dying.
Akpabio, who first read the letter from Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, who defected from the ADC to the Labour Party, asked all those leaving the party to send in a single letter to avoid a situation where the Senate would have to go over the process repeatedly.
His remarks sparked laughter in parliament.
Making a direct reference to Abaribe, Akpabio said, “Senator, I should be asking you, ‘How many times have you defected in a month?’
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that at least 17 members of the House of Representatives have dumped the ADC and defected to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development was made known during plenary on Tuesday, when the Speaker, Tajudeen Abass, read out notices of defection from the affected lawmakers on the floor of the House.
He also announced the defection of Leke Abejide from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Those who defected to the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene and Abdulhakeem Ado.
