Prominent opposition politician and former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has strongly condemned the recent wave of killings and kidnappings targeting worshippers in Ekiti State.
He described the situation as a tragic reflection of a nation where human life is rapidly losing its value.
In a statement posted on his verified social media platform, X, formally Twitter, Adebayo expressed deep sorrow over the attacks, insisting that no Nigerian should have to live in fear while engaging in acts of worship.
His comments come amid growing public outrage over insecurity across parts of the country, particularly incidents involving religious gatherings and rural communities.
According to him, the recurring violence underscores what he termed a fundamental failure of governance.
He accused those in power of offering “excuses instead of protection,” arguing that the primary duty of any government is the safeguarding of lives and property—an obligation he believes is being grossly neglected.
Adebayo used the moment to draw a sharp contrast between his vision for Nigeria’s security architecture and what he described as the current politicisation of security institutions, pledging that if elected president he would end political interference in the operations of security agencies, stressing the need for professionalism, independence, and strict internal accountability.
He further criticised the alleged use of security forces for political purposes, warning that such practices weaken their capacity to respond effectively to real threats.
Instead, he advocated for a system where corrupt officials are disciplined internally and institutions are reoriented to serve the public interest rather than political elites.
“The Nigerian state must be rebuilt around the protection of its people,” he implied, noting that restoring public confidence in security agencies would require both structural reforms and leadership committed to transparency.
The SDP chieftain also extended solidarity to victims and their families, reiterating his party’s call for what he described as “competent and accountable leadership” that prioritises the safety and dignity of citizens above all else.
