Lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Church, Nana Kofi Kantanka, has alleged that former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo fired the first shot during an incident that disrupted the introduction of the church’s newly appointed leader.
According to him, Adwoa Safo attempted to force her way into the venue with her vehicle when she arrived.
Speaking on JoyNews on June 21, 2026, Nana Kofi Kantanka said a loud noise was heard, which was later discovered to have come from a vehicle crashing into the southern gate.
“We realised that it was Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo who was in the car. Since she couldn’t penetrate the gate through with the car, she moved to the northern gate and repeated the same action”.
“The information I got was that she fired the first shot and then banged the gate with her car. The private security also knew that the lives of people were at risk, so they were giving warning shots,” he said.
He added that he could not confirm reports that Adwoa Safo was injured during the incident.
“As to whether she was wounded, I can’t confirm that,” he added.
The lawyer further stated that no one had prevented the former MP from entering the premises.
“No one prevented her from entering. If she had parked and indicated she wanted to enter, that would have been all,” he said.
Nana Kofi Kantanka also disclosed that the church would conduct its own investigation into the matter.
“We [Church] will also conduct our private investigation, and anybody who has perpetrated any wrongdoing will be prosecuted,” he stated.
The comments follow reports that Adwoa Safo is receiving medical treatment after an alleged shooting incident at the residence of her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday while supporters had gathered as part of efforts to install Israel Kwadwo Safo as successor to his late father, Kwadwo Safo.
Witnesses alleged that armed men opened fire on Adwoa Safo’s vehicle, discharging multiple rounds of ammunition. One bullet is said to have grazed her near the neck.
She was subsequently rushed for medical treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.
Police from the Dome District Command were said to have been deployed to the scene as tensions escalated.
The incident comes amid growing disagreements within the Kristo Asafo family over the succession of the late church founder.
Reports indicate that some family members are opposing efforts to install Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the next leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that a High Court injunction has halted attempts by some elders of the church to install Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, as successor to the late founder.
