Pakistan is facing a serious crisis that is putting pressure on both food and fuel supplies, raising concerns for millions of people already struggling with high inflation and economic stress.

The country is now dealing with wheat shortage along with an ongoing fuel price shock. According to reports, the wheat sector in Pakistan has once again entered a difficult phase. After the recent harvest in March and April, production has fallen short of expectations.
Why is Pakistan facing a wheat shortage?
Experts say the crisis is not only due to hoarding but also deeper structural problems. Poor irrigation systems, aging canal networks, and falling groundwater levels have reduced agricultural efficiency.
Rising costs of fertiliser, diesel, electricity, and labour have also made wheat farming less profitable for farmers, forcing many to sell at low prices or reduce production.
Farmers’ groups have blamed the government for delayed policy decisions. They argue that authorities were inactive when farmers were struggling, but are now reacting after prices have started rising.
Mill owners have also pointed to inconsistent rules, financing delays, and frequent raids on stocks, which have damaged market confidence and disrupted supply chains.
Is fuel inflation making the situation worse?
Along with food stress, Pakistan is also facing a sharp rise in fuel import costs. The global oil market has been impacted by tensions involving Iran and broader regional instability. As a result, Pakistan’s monthly oil import bill has reportedly doubled from around 300 million dollars to as high as 600–800 million dollars. This has further increased pressure on an already weak economy.
Experts warn that unless policy stability is restored and supply chains are improved, both wheat and fuel crises could deepen in the coming months.
