The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Naijaonpoint reports that the endorsement formed part of the resolutions reached at the association’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja.
The meeting was chaired by the ALGON National President, Bello Lawal, and attended by members from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as past leaders of the association.
The motion for Tinubu’s endorsement was moved by a former ALGON President, Alabi Kolade David, and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON Chairman, Anani Hamisu Mohammed.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting on Sunday, Mohammed said the association believed that continuity under the Tinubu administration would strengthen administration at the grassroots level.
He said a second term for the President would “deepen grassroots governance” and consolidate ongoing reforms.
ALGON also reaffirmed its support for the Tinubu administration.
The association said its decision was based on the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which it noted had improved fiscal capacity and autonomy at the local government level.
ALGON said the policies of the current administration had strengthened the capacity of councils to perform their constitutional responsibilities and deliver development to communities.
It added that stronger local governments would help improve service delivery, deepen democracy and bring governance closer to the people.
Meanwhile, the council also suspended three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct.
Those suspended are Zakari Iliyasu, Chairman of Agwara Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in Niger State; Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi, Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in Kwara State; and Abba Shehu Tambuwal, Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Council and ALGON Chairman in Sokoto State.
ALGON said the three officials were suspended for alleged impersonation, actions against the association’s interest and abuse of constitutional provisions.
The association warned ministries, departments and agencies, state governments and development partners against dealing with the suspended officials.
It said the affected chairmen no longer had the authority to act on behalf of ALGON in any capacity.
The association added that any engagement with them as representatives of ALGON would not be recognised.
ALGON also passed a vote of confidence in its national president, Bello Lawal.
Members pledged loyalty to his leadership and restated their commitment to the unity and stability of the association.
The council said it would continue to support policies that strengthen local government administration and promote development at the grassroots.
