Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday hosted Peter Obi and other opposition figures at his residence in Abuja, in what insiders described as a strategic meeting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Also present at the gathering were Senator Victor Umeh, former Anambra State Governor Achike Udenwa, and Victor Oganku.
Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed to The Cable that discussions centred on strengthening the opposition front and safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic future.
The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by opposition leaders to build alliances capable of challenging the ruling party in the next electoral cycle.
Amaechi, Obi, and former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, are all members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and are reportedly positioning themselves for the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.
Amaechi had previously contested the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but finished second behind President Bola Tinubu.
In March, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed that the party was considering adopting a consensus approach in selecting its presidential candidate.
He noted that while direct primaries and consensus remain options, indirect primaries have been ruled out under the amended Electoral Act.
Amaechi Rejects Consensus Push
However, Amaechi has opposed the idea of a consensus arrangement, insisting that aspirants should test their popularity through the ballot.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, he said he had positioned himself as a strong contender for the presidency on the ADC platform.
He argued that Nigerians are seeking capable leadership to tackle economic hardship and insecurity.
Despite his ambition, Amaechi expressed willingness to support Atiku if the former vice-president secures the party’s ticket.
