Amosun blasts Ogun APC reports, denies forcing aspirants to step down

Former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has distanced himself from reports surrounding a recent All Progressives Congress (APC) meeting in Ogun Central, insisting that accounts of the gathering were inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued by his media office, Amosun described media reports of the April 23 meeting held at the residence of party elder Chief Olusegun Osoba as a “complete misrepresentation” of what transpired.

The former senator explained that the meeting was convened at his instance to address what he termed “insinuations” about his potential participation in the 2027 general elections.

Clarifying his position, Amosun said three aspirants for the Ogun Central senatorial seat had earlier visited him to seek his support, noting that each of them had indicated a willingness to step aside if he decided to contest.

According to him, “they volunteered that if I am interested in contesting for the office, they would withdraw their candidacy.”

However, Amosun firmly denied asking any aspirant to step down in his favour.

“Nowhere throughout the meeting did I request anyone to withdraw from the race for me because that would be undemocratic and unacceptable,” he stated.

The former governor also took a strong stance on the integrity of the party’s internal processes, warning against manipulated outcomes.

“I would not be part of a primary election whose result is predetermined,” Amosun said.

Reaffirming his democratic credentials, he added: “I wish to reiterate that I am not only a democrat, I have contested and won election twice to the office of Governor of Ogun State and twice as a Senator of the Federal Republic.”

Amosun further urged the media to exercise due diligence in reporting political developments, cautioning against reliance on information from “interested parties.”
