In advance of the 2027 general elections, Jonathan Vatsa, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, has issued a warning against attempts to undermine opposition parties and impose candidates.
The former Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism told reporters in Minna that any attempt to suppress opposition parties or deprive Nigerians of an open political process might spark violence.
He emphasizes that “non-performing politicians must be voted out” and believes that underperforming leaders should be permitted to run for office.
Vatsa warned that calls for a one-party state could lead to chaos and called them dangerous and unconstitutional.
Additionally, he claimed that despite what he called “plenty of government revenue,” Nigerians are dissatisfied with the state of the economy.
He urged the ruling party to gain public support by performance rather than political manipulation, stating, “There is excess money but excess poverty in the land.”
The APC leader also warned against stifling dissenting opinions, stating that democracy can only flourish when people are allowed to select their own leaders.
