APC controls 31 states, opposition no threat — Uzodimma

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has declared that the All Progressives Congress remains the dominant political force in the country, insisting that recent opposition realignments pose no threat to the ruling party.

Uzodimma spoke on Saturday in Abuja after appearing before the APC screening panel ahead of the party’s senatorial primary election.

Reacting to reports that the Nigeria Democratic Congress had zoned its presidential ticket to the South, the governor said the numerical strength and spread of the APC across the federation showed that Nigerians still supported President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party.

“In a country of 36 states, about 31 are transparently APC states. Nigeria has already spoken and we are not threatened,” he said.

The governor argued that the APC’s control of the majority of states reflected the confidence Nigerians had in the party and the leadership of President Tinubu.

According to him, the ruling party remained firmly in control politically despite growing conversations around opposition coalitions ahead of the next general election.

Uzodimma also questioned the political weight of some opposition parties, suggesting that their influence remained limited compared to the nationwide structure and electoral strength of the APC.

Speaking on the APC screening exercise, the governor described the process as smooth and in line with the party’s internal democratic procedures.

“It was a very good exercise. APC is one family and we know ourselves. Following the requirements of the party, I submitted myself for proper screening and I believe they are satisfied,” he stated.

Uzodimma, who is seeking to move to the Senate after completing his tenure as governor, said his focus remained on effective representation for his constituents.

“My ambition is to go to the Senate to represent my people. Whatever rules we meet there, we will follow,” he added.

The governor expressed confidence that the APC would continue to maintain its political dominance ahead of the 2027 elections.
