The Nigerian Army has unveiled plans to strengthen local production of military hardware through strategic collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund in drone warfare, robotics and advanced defence technology.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, made the disclosure during a meeting with the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sunday Echono, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Shaibu said Nigeria must aggressively invest in military research, innovation and human capital development to reduce reliance on imported military equipment.
The Army Chief praised TETFund for supporting the Nigerian Army University Biu and the Nigerian Army College of Management Science, describing both institutions as critical to manpower development within the military.
According to him, the Army is planning specialised training programmes for officers in armament technology, drone warfare, robotics and artificial intelligence.
He noted that the initiative would prepare the Nigerian Army to confront emerging security threats and improve operational efficiency in modern warfare.
“Contemporary security threats demand a whole-of-society approach where academic innovation, technological advancement and military capability are deliberately integrated,” the COAS stated.
Shaibu stressed that local expertise in drone and weapons technology would strengthen Nigeria’s self-reliance and support indigenous production of military hardware.
Responding, Sunday Echono reaffirmed the agency’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the Armed Forces in advanced research, military intelligence and innovation.
He said TETFund remained committed to supporting strategic initiatives capable of improving national security and national development.
