The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Northwest University Kano (NWU) Branch, has called on the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately domesticate and implement the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement, particularly the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA) approved for university staff.
The call was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Mansur Said PhD and the Branch Secretary, Comrade Yusuf Ahmed Gwarzo, PhD, and made available to journalists on Monday in Kano.
SolaceBase reports that the demand comes amid ongoing implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, which introduced the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and other welfare packages for university lecturers.

Last week, the Federal Government announced the release of funds for the payment of five months of CATA arrears to eligible academic staff in federal universities and directed vice-chancellors to ensure prompt disbursement of the allowances.
According to the union, its congress held on June 3, 2026, reviewed developments surrounding the implementation of the allowances and expressed concern over the continued delay despite expectations that payment would commence in January 2026.
The statement noted that several correspondences had been sent to the university administration and the Kano State Government on the matter, but no significant progress had been recorded.
ASUU-NWU stressed that the welfare of university staff remains central to the stability, productivity and growth of the university system, warning that delays in implementing approved entitlements unnecessarily create hardship for workers and lead to the accumulation of avoidable arrears.
“The Union respectfully reminds the relevant authorities that the welfare of university staff remains central to the stability, productivity and growth of the university system,” the statement said.

The union further urged the Kano State Government and all relevant stakeholders to expedite action and ensure the immediate implementation of the allowances, maintaining that honouring commitments made to university workers is essential for sustaining industrial harmony and promoting excellence in the higher education sector.
ASUU-NWU also acknowledged the efforts of stakeholders who have continued to engage with the government on issues affecting staff welfare and appealed to them to intensify their engagements to secure a speedy resolution of the matter.
“ASUU-NWU remains committed to constructive engagement and dialogue and expects that the necessary action will be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students, the university community and industrial harmony,” the statement added.
