The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has warned that academic activities in state-owned universities across Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa states could be disrupted if their governments fail to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement.
The union said although federal universities have commenced implementation of the agreement, none of the state-owned universities in the Kano Zone has complied with its provisions.
Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Wednesday, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Comrade Abdulrazaq Ibrahim, said the union’s patience had been stretched after years of negotiations and restraint.
“We call on the governments of Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa states to, with immediate effect, expedite the domestication and full implementation of all provisions of the duly signed Agreement. Continued delay, selective implementation, or outright disregard will inevitably undermine industrial harmony and disrupt the academic calendar,” he said.
The 2025 agreement, which was signed after eight years of negotiations, provides for the payment of salary arrears, Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professional Secretariat Allowance (SAA), and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
According to the union, universities in Bauchi, Ekiti, Osun, Benue and Sokoto states have already implemented the agreement, making the continued non-compliance by the affected state governments more pronounced.
ASUU also cautioned university bursars against imposing tax on the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, insisting that the allowance is tax-exempt under the agreement.
The union further criticised the Federal Government for refusing to pay the three-and-a-half months’ salaries withheld during the last nationwide strike. It also expressed concern over delays in pension remittances and third-party deductions.
Beyond welfare issues, ASUU raised concerns over the country’s worsening security situation, citing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and farmer-herder clashes as major threats to national stability.
The union appealed to parents, students, civil society organisations and the media to pressure the governments of Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa states to implement the agreement, warning that continued failure to do so could threaten industrial peace and disrupt the academic calendar.
The Kano Zone of ASUU comprises Kaduna State University, Kano University of Science and Technology, Northwest University and Sule Lamido University.
