The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has called on the Federal Government to tackle insecurity and the rising economic hardship among Nigerians.
Prof. Jurbe Mwolwus, the Chairperson of ASUU, University of Jos chapter, made the call during a news conference on Monday in Jos.
Mwolwus, who decried the increasing rate of hunger, malnutrition and poverty among Nigerians, advised the government to take urgent steps towards addressing the menace.
He further said that over the years, insecurity had denied most Nigerians, particularly farmers access to their means of livelihoods.
“The country’s socio-political and economic woes are daily compounded by the intractable insecurity problem.
“In the North, the resurgence of Boko Haram and other terrorist activities, the escalation of banditry and the farmer-herder conflicts have led to the killing and kidnapping of many, as well as destruction and desertion of several communities.
“The unknown gunmen phenomenon in the South-East has turned the region into a landscape of terror.
“The South-West and South-South are not shielded from the widespread experiences of banditry, killings and kidnapping for ransom,” he said
Mwolwus said that the myriad of security challenges had worsened the living condition of most of Nigerians.
He further advised the federal government to particularly address the rising poverty, hunger, unemployment and inflation in Nigeria
