Marvel Studios has unveiled the first official trailer for its upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, revealing a dramatic new direction for the superhero franchise and confirming the return of several major characters.

The trailer, showcased at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, introduced a surprise twist with Robert Downey Jr appearing as the masked villain Doctor Doom, marking a major shift from his iconic role as Iron Man in previous Marvel films.

The film, scheduled for release on December 18, brings together a wide range of Marvel characters in what is expected to be one of the studio’s biggest crossover events yet.

Footage shown at the event included a clash between Gambit and Shang-Chi, played by Channing Tatum and Simu Liu, while veteran actor Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor Xavier, warning of an approaching threat.

The trailer also featured the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor, in scenes hinting at the reuniting of the Avengers team.

On stage at CinemaCon, Evans said his return to the franchise was driven by a strong narrative reason for the character’s comeback.

“I said I would only come back if there was a real reason. And in Doomsday, there is a very real reason that these heroes need Steve Rogers,” he told the audience.
