A businessman and an Islamic cleric abducted by suspected bandits in Kwara State have regained their freedom after spending several days in captivity, ending an ordeal that sparked anxiety in their community.
The victims were kidnapped during a recent attack on Eggi Oyo-Ipo (Eggipo) Community in Irepodun Local Government Area, where the gunmen reportedly demanded a total ransom of N65 million for their release.
The abductors had allegedly demanded N50 million for the businessman and N15 million for the Islamic cleric.
Their release was confirmed on Sunday by the Coordinator of the community, Elder Olaitan Oyin-Zubair, who disclosed that the victims returned safely to the town on Saturday evening.
According to him, the victims quietly found their way back into the community after days in captivity.
“We are relieved and grateful to announce that the two victims kidnapped at Eggipo a few days ago have regained their freedom,” Oyin-Zubair said.
“By the grace of Allah, they safely sneaked into the town yesterday evening.”
He thanked God for preserving the lives of the victims and prayed for improved security across the community and the state.
“We thank Allah for their safe return and we pray for lasting peace and security in Eggipo, Irepodun Local Government Area and Kwara State at large,” he added.
It was, however, not immediately clear whether any ransom was paid before the victims were released, as neither the community nor security agencies provided details of the circumstances surrounding their freedom.
The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges confronting several communities in Kwara State, where residents have repeatedly expressed concerns over increasing cases of kidnapping and attacks by armed gangs.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the victims’ release or provide further details on efforts to apprehend the kidnappers.
The incident adds to the growing wave of kidnappings across parts of the country, despite sustained security operations aimed at curbing banditry and other violent crimes.
