Belgium have reached an agreement to appoint former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as the new head coach of the national team, with the Dutchman set to replace Rudi Garcia following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Van Bommel has agreed to a deal that will keep him in charge of the Red Devils until June 2028.
Although the contracts have yet to be signed, all parties have reportedly reached a full agreement, with an official announcement expected after the completion of the necessary paperwork.
Romano confirmed the development in a post on X, he wrote: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go!
“Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”
The appointment will mark Van Bommel’s first role in international football after managerial spells with PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp.
During his time at Antwerp, the former Dutch midfielder guided the Belgian club to a historic league and cup double in the 2022-23 season.
Belgium will be hoping Van Bommel can oversee the next phase of the national team’s rebuilding process as preparations begin for the UEFA Euro 2028 qualification campaign.
The Red Devils exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the quarter-final stage after a run that showed glimpses of promise before ending in defeat to Spain.
Van Bommel’s expected appointment signals the start of a new era for Belgium as they seek to build on the legacy of their golden generation while developing a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
