Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has described Spain as the “best team” at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting his side faces a huge challenge in Sunday’s final while expressing confidence that both teams will produce a memorable contest.
The defending champions booked their place in the final after defeating England 2-1, while Spain advanced with a 2-0 victory over France.
Scaloni praises Spain
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Scaloni said Spain’s performances throughout the tournament have made them the team to beat.
“I’ll be worried just seeing the Spanish team bus,” Scaloni said.
“Everything is worrying when you face a great team that’s having such a great run under Luis de la Fuente.”
The Argentine manager noted that both teams share similar football philosophies, particularly their preference for controlling possession and building attacks from the back.
He said he hopes the final lives up to expectations and reflects the quality both nations have displayed throughout the competition.
Messi remains key figure
Scaloni also highlighted Argentina’s experience in major tournaments but insisted that Spain possess players capable of handling the pressure of a World Cup final.
“Once the match starts and the ball is touched, the pressure disappears and the focus shifts to the performance,” he said.
The 48-year-old reserved special praise for captain Lionel Messi, who has guided Argentina to another World Cup final at the age of 39.
“We hope to win the title, but even if we don’t, Messi will remain a role model for generations and a source of pride for Argentina,” Scaloni added.
Argentina are seeking to retain the World Cup title they won four years ago, while Spain are aiming to become world champions for the second time in their history.
