On Thursday, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, the widow of the late Rotimi Akeredolu, the former governor of Ondo State, formally bought her nomination and expression of interest papers to run for the Imo East senatorial seat in the general elections of 2027.
At the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, fans picked up her nomination paperwork.
If elected, Akeredolu will take Ezenwa Onyewuchi’s place as the senator for Imo East Senatorial District.
Just two months have passed since the former Ondo First Lady formally joined the Labour Party, indicating a growing engagement in party politics ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
In a social media post, Akeredolu announced the change and emphasized her involvement in the party’s recent high-level administrative initiatives.
Other candidates running for different elected posts on the Labour Party platform were drawn to the exercise on Thursday.
These included Eric Edward and Mohammed Hayatu Atiku, who were running for seats in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Hassan Barguwa, who was running for the Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency seat in Adamawa State, and Dennis Oshai, who was running for the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency seat in Delta State.
After obtaining his candidacy forms, Barguwa, a former member of the House of Representatives for the Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency, spoke to reporters and praised the party’s procedures.
“We are pleased with the proceedings and the way the new leadership is managing the party administration,” he stated.
“I also think that the Labour Party will win back a lot of seats in Adamawa State and throughout the Northeast.”
Ken Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, responded by saying he was pleased with the increasing number of candidates since the form sales started on Wednesday.
“Today, the remarkable spike in the competition for Labour Party nomination forms for various elective offices persisted. Additionally, you can observe how a number of candidates hoping to run in the general elections of 2027 are swarming the party headquarters to buy their nomination papers.
Thus, all is proceeding according to plan. We are fully ready for the elections in 2027,” he said.
