Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has arrived back in Ghana following an impressive showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he became the first Ghana Premier League-based goalkeeper to feature in the tournament for the Black Stars.
A video of his arrival shows the Hearts of Oak captain at Kotoka International Airport, dressed casually and carrying his belongings as he made his way through the terminal.
Benjamin Asare’s World Cup campaign marked a historic breakthrough for the 33-year-old, who was thrust into action as a substitute during Ghana’s opening Group L match against Panama after first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was forced off with injury.
He went on to keep back-to-back clean sheets in Ghana’s wins and draws, including a goalless result against England, becoming only the second Ghana goalkeeper after Richard Kingson to record two clean sheets at a single World Cup.
His rise to international recognition came after years in Ghana’s domestic league, including a spell at Accra Great Olympics and his current role as captain of Accra Hearts of Oak, a club he joined in July 2024.
Prior to his World Cup breakthrough, Benjamin Asare drew national attention after being spotted commuting to training on public transport, an image that later led to him receiving a car gift from a Ghanaian businessman.
Benjamin Asare’s contract with Hearts of Oak runs through June 2027, and he is expected to return to domestic club duty following his World Cup exploits.
