The Black Stars have arrived at the Accra International Airport in Accra following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but unlike the heroic welcomes seen in other nations, the players returned to a largely indifferent reception with fellow travellers and airport users going about their daily activities without acknowledging the team.
Footage and accounts from the airport indicate that no significant crowd gathered to welcome the players home, with Ghanaians at the terminal appearing unmoved by the team’s presence, a stark contrast to the jubilant reception reportedly extended to Cape Verde’s national team upon their own return, despite the Tubarões Azuis having also exited the tournament.
The subdued reception is widely interpreted as a reflection of public disappointment over the Black Stars’ performance at the tournament, where Ghana beat Panama 1-0, drew 0-0 with England, lost 2-1 to Croatia in the group stage, and were subsequently eliminated by Colombia in the Round of 16.
The Ghana Football Association had not issued a statement on the team’s return or announced any official reception programme though.
The muted homecoming follows a week in which Ghana jersey prices on the streets of Accra crashed to as low as GH¢3, another vivid measure of the public’s deflated mood following the tournament exit.
Calls for a comprehensive review of the team’s World Cup campaign and the appointment of technical staff going forward have already begun across Ghanaian media.
The head coach also resigned and dropped some key paragraphs worth discussing around the Ghana Football Association.
