According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, July 05, 2026, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has identified instability in the Lake Chad Basin, the Sahel region, and the Gulf of Guinea as major external drivers worsening Nigeria’s internal security challenges.
Oluyede made the remarks during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 lecture held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he stressed that Nigeria’s security landscape has become increasingly complex and requires adaptive and innovative responses.
