Can Israel survive without US? Growing tensions between Trump and Netanyahu raise questions over security of Jewish nation

Growing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have triggered fresh debate over the future of one of the world’s closest alliances. Reports of disagreements over Iran and Trump’s criticism of Netanyahu have raised an important question: Can Israel sustain itself without American military, diplomatic and economic support?

Why are Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu at odds?

According to reports, the differences between the two leaders are largely linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The Trump administration is believed to be exploring the possibility of a broader peace agreement with Tehran and is seeking to reduce America’s involvement in the Middle East.

Netanyahu and his government, however, are said to favour continuing military operations against Iran and Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah. Trump has reportedly expressed concern that Israeli strikes could complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts.

American weapons remain crucial for Israel’s defence

Israel’s military capabilities are heavily supported by US-made weapons and defence systems. During recent conflicts, Washington provided military assistance and approved several defence deals.

Key air defence systems such as Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow rely on American funding and components. The United States has also supplied interceptor missiles used to defend against ballistic missile attacks.

Israel’s fleet of F-35, F-15 and F-16 fighter jets is also sourced from the United States.

In addition, the US has supplied guided bombs, artillery shells and approved multi-billion-dollar defence agreements, including Apache helicopters and tactical vehicles.

US diplomatic backing acts as Israel’s global shield

Apart from military support, the United States has also played a key role in protecting Israel diplomatically.

At the United Nations Security Council, Washington has repeatedly used its veto power to block resolutions critical of Israel. The US has also backed Israel against growing international pressure over conflicts in Gaza and other regions.

Analysts say that if Washington adopts a more neutral approach in the future, Israel could face greater diplomatic and economic pressure from the international community.

Can Israel survive without America?

Report suggests Israel would continue to exist without US support, but the country would face serious challenges.

Israel has a strong domestic defence industry and is among the world’s leading countries in military technology. However, its resources are limited and it cannot fully meet all of its defence requirements on its own.

The United States accounts for a major share of Israel’s military imports. Although countries such as India and several European nations also provide defence equipment, reports say replacing American support entirely would be difficult.

Without US military aid, intelligence sharing and diplomatic backing, Israel may have to seek new strategic partners or adjust its policies in dealing with Iran and regional conflicts.
