Chelsea have signed Italy defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday, July 1.
No transfer fee was officially disclosed, although reports in the British media suggest the 21-year-old’s move is worth around £43 million ($57 million), rising to £47 million with add-ons.
The transfer comes as Chelsea look to rebuild after a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season, with new manager Xabi Alonso beginning his tenure at Stamford Bridge on the same day the signing was confirmed. Palestra is the first addition since Alonso formally took charge.
Reports in Italy indicated that Palestra had been close to joining Inter Milan before Chelsea intervened with a more attractive offer. “Many things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” Palestra said on the club’s website after the move was confirmed.
“I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to meet the fans, my teammates and the manager.” He added that discussions with Alonso played a key role in his decision, describing the manager’s tactical approach as exciting and expressing confidence in Chelsea’s squad.
Palestra enjoyed a strong 2025/26 season on loan at Cagliari, where he played primarily as a full-back and wing-back, earning recognition as Serie A Defender of the Year. He also made his senior debut for Italy during their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying play-offs.
The arrival of Palestra is expected to contribute to Chelsea’s defensive rebuild, with Alonso overseeing significant changes in the squad following a difficult defensive campaign last season. Marc Cucurella has already left for Real Madrid, while the club is reportedly considering further defensive reinforcements, including Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix.
