India has increased the production of its BrahMos supersonic cruise missile by 20%, strengthening its defence capabilities. The increase comes after the launch of a new production facility in Lucknow, making the country better prepared to meet both domestic and export demand. Developed through a joint venture between India and Russia, the BrahMos missile gained global attention for its capabilities and remains one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles.
What Is BrahMos?
BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. The company was established in 1998 and is named after India’s Brahmaputra River and Russia’s Moskva River. The company designs, develops, manufactures, markets and maintains the BrahMos missile system throughout its entire life cycle.
Key Features of the BrahMos Missile
The BrahMos missile can be launched from land, warships, submarines and fighter aircraft, making it a highly versatile weapon system. It can strike both land and sea targets and travels at a speed of Mach 2.8, making it one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles currently in service. The extended-range version of the missile can hit targets up to 800 km away.
Four Production Centres Across India
BrahMos Aerospace now has four manufacturing facilities in India. The newest and largest plant in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has increased the company’s overall production capacity by 20%. The other production units are located in Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Pilani in Rajasthan.
Focus on Next-Generation BrahMos-II
The company is also investing in the development of BrahMos-II, a next-generation hypersonic cruise missile that is expected to offer even higher speed and advanced capabilities.
Growing Global Demand
The BrahMos missile is attracting increasing interest from foreign countries. The Philippines became the first international customer to purchase the shore-based anti-ship missile system. Other Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia and Vietnam, have also shown interest in acquiring the missile.
BrahMos Aerospace Co-Director Alexander Maksichev said the Lucknow facility has already produced its first batch of missiles. He added that the new plant has significantly increased both the production speed and manufacturing capacity, helping India meet future export orders more efficiently.
