Christian leaders and clerics from different denominations on Thursday gathered in Lagos to offer prayers for Nigeria’s unity, peace and political stability, declaring that despite the country’s challenges, Nigeria remains “a nation loved by God.”
The interdenominational gathering, organised by the Christian NGOs Coordinating Council, took place at the Chapel of Christ the Light, where special prayers were offered for President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and other political aspirants ahead of the 2027 electoral process.
The National Prayer Summit, themed “A Nation Loved by God,” attracted bishops, apostles, pastors and worshippers who stressed the urgent need for divine intervention in Nigeria’s political, economic and security challenges.
Speaking at the summit, the Coordinator of the Christian NGOs Coordinating Council, Rev. Dr. Olufemi Sam Ogedengbe, said the nation needed leaders who possess integrity, compassion and divine wisdom to steer the country toward progress and stability.
According to him, the prayer gathering was convened to seek God’s direction for Nigeria and intercede for leaders and aspiring political office holders ahead of future elections.
“As Christians, what we can offer the nation at this critical time is to seek the face of God in raising good and spirit-filled leaders that will govern with divine counsel and direction,” Ogedengbe said.
“That is why we must begin praying earnestly before the election season fully begins.”
He urged Nigerians not to relent in praying for the country’s unity, security and prosperity, expressing confidence that God would raise leaders committed to justice, peace and national development.
Delivering an exhortation at the summit, the Presiding Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ the Light, Rev. Dr. Dele Ajayi, declared that Nigeria continues to enjoy divine mercy despite prevailing socio-economic difficulties.
“Nigeria is a nation loved by God. There are still many reasons for us to appreciate Him. Prayer has continued to sustain this country and its people,” Ajayi said.
He maintained that God remains sovereign over the affairs of the nation and would guide the emergence of leaders who genuinely care about the welfare of Nigerians.
“God has a plan concerning who will rule this nation. He will not choose someone who will not be good for the people because God will never give us what will destroy us,” he added.
Special prayers were also offered for national peace, economic recovery, security and unity, with clerics urging citizens to remain hopeful and committed to the country’s progress despite current challenges.
Among clerics and dignitaries present at the summit were Primate Olusoga, Bishop S.K. Okunade, Bush Shonibare, Primate Date Akindele, Archbishop Fatade, Apostle Father Adeniyi Adebayo, Rev. Mother Toyin, Baba Lesekese and several other Christian leaders.
