Cleanwave Recycling Nigeria Limited, in partnership with Clean Technology Hub, has launched the Cleanwave Green Clubs for Schools Initiative in Kano State to promote environmental sustainability and climate education among students.
The programme, which commenced at Yadudu Memorial Academy, is designed to equip pupils with knowledge on climate change, recycling, the circular economy, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, innovation and environmental leadership.
Speaking at the launch, the Community Manager of Cleanwave Recycling Nigeria Limited, Hafsat Adamu, said the initiative aims to nurture a new generation of environmentally conscious young people while exposing them to opportunities within the recycling economy.
She explained that students were introduced to the causes and effects of climate change, its impact on health and the environment, and practical ways to reduce environmental degradation through responsible waste management.
Adamu said the organisation plans to establish Green Clubs in participating schools to sustain environmental awareness and encourage students to actively participate in recycling and other sustainability initiatives.
According to her, the pilot phase will cover 10 schools across Kano State, comprising five public and five private schools, before the programme is expanded statewide.
Also speaking, the GSS1 Class Teacher and Green Habitat Hub coordinator at Yadudu Memorial Academy, Abubakar Zakaria, said the initiative would help instil better environmental habits among students, including discouraging tree destruction and promoting proper sanitation.
He added that pupils who participated in the training would be required to share the knowledge with their classmates to ensure the entire school community benefits from the programme.
Some of the students described the training as enlightening.
A Primary Five pupil, Muhammad Auwal, said he learned practical skills in waste sorting and recycling, while JSS1 student Aisha Na’aba said the programme taught her how plastic waste could be transformed into useful items such as chairs and tables.
She expressed her intention to share the knowledge with her siblings and friends to encourage proper waste disposal and environmental conservation.
The initiative supports several Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and partnerships for sustainable development.
