The Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa Worldwide has received with profound satisfaction the judgment of the Federal High Court convicting and sentencing the perpetrators of the heinous attack on worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.
On behalf of the members of NBM of Africa Worldwide across Nigeria and the diaspora, I commend the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS), other security agencies involved in the investigation and prosecution of the matter, and the Judiciary for demonstrating that justice may be delayed but will not be denied.
The Owo massacre was one of the darkest moments in our national history. The brutal killing of innocent worshippers shocked the conscience of the nation and left many families devastated. While no judicial pronouncement can restore the lives that were lost, the judgment serves as a powerful reminder that those who commit acts of terror against innocent Nigerians will ultimately be held accountable under the law.
We particularly commend the court for its courage, diligence and fidelity to the rule of law in bringing this painful chapter closer to closure for the victims and their families.
However, as Oliver Twist asks for more, Nigerians also ask for more.
While we celebrate this important victory for justice, we respectfully call on the Federal Government and all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts towards the rescue and safe return of all persons who remain in captivity across the country, particularly the school children abducted in Oyo State and other innocent Nigerians still being held by criminal elements.
The successful investigation and prosecution of the Owo attackers have demonstrated that our institutions possess the capacity to confront violent criminals when sufficient resources, coordination and determination are deployed. The same commitment should now be directed towards securing the freedom of every abducted child and every citizen unlawfully deprived of liberty.
The tears of grieving families must not be forgotten. The hopes of parents whose children remain in captivity must not be abandoned. Every rescued victim strengthens public confidence in government and reinforces the principle that the security and welfare of the people remain the primary purpose of government.
NBM of Africa Worldwide therefore urges the Federal Government, state governments, security agencies, community leaders and all stakeholders to continue working together until every abducted child and every captive Nigerian is safely reunited with their families.
May the souls of the victims of the Owo massacre continue to rest in peace, and may justice, security and peace prevail throughout our nation.
