‘Couldn’t care less…’: Trump responds after Tehran suspends US-Iran peace talks due to…

Iran war: US President Donald Trump has brushed aside concerns over the potential collapse of US-Iran peace talks, hours after Tehran announced it had suspended indirect negotiations with Washington to protest Israel’s military operations in Lebanon and Gaza, which it termed as a violation of the ceasefire agreement.

What did Trump say about US-Iran talks?

“I don’t care if they’re over, honestly. I really don’t care. I couldn’t care less,” Trump told CNBC when asked about reports of Iran suspending indirect talks with the United States through mediators.

Interestingly, minutes after the CNBC interview, Trump said in a Truth Social post that he had a “very productive call” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and “a very good call” with Hezbollah, claiming that both agreed that “all shooting will stop”.

“I had a very productive call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, and there will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back. Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel,” he wrote.

In a later post, Trump claimed that talks with Iran “are continuing at a rapid pace”. “Talks are continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he claimed.

Why Iran suspended peace talks with US?

Trump’s response came hours after Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that Iran’s negotiating team had suspended exchanges of messages with the US through mediators in protest over Israeli military operations in Lebanon and Gaza

Tehran asserted that the Israeli military attacks in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip are in violation of the conditions tied to its temporary ceasefire deal with Washington, and no further talks would take place until the attacks are halted.

“Given the continuation of the Israeli regime’s attacks in Lebanon, and considering that Lebanon had been one of the preconditions for a ceasefire — which has now been violated on all fronts, including Lebanon — the Iranian negotiating team is suspending ‘talks and exchanges of texts through mediators,’” Tasnim reported.

The development comes after reports emerged that Trump has sought several amendments to the proposed peace deal his envoys reached with their Iranian counterparts, sending the agreement back for further revisions as he wants stronger provisions on certain matters.
