The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Mohammed Umar gave the order pending the hearing and determination of a motion seeking a stay of the court’s earlier decision revoking Sowore’s bail and issuing a bench warrant for his arrest.
The judge subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the application.
The motion for stay was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika.
Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court premises accompanied by members of his group, some of whom carried placards.
Justice Umar had on June 16 revoked the activist’s bail after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial.
The judge also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
Sowore has denied the allegations.
