Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has received the Outstanding Governor Award for the North-West region from the Daily Times Nigeria, DTN, as part of activities marking the newspaper’s centenary anniversary.
The governor received the award on Thursday in Abuja at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards, organised to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the newspaper, regarded as one of Nigeria’s oldest surviving newspapers.
Mr Lawal was honoured for his leadership, public service and contributions to national development, according to the organisers.
Chairman of the DTN@100 Heroes Awards Council, Bolaji Okusaga, said the governor emerged as the recipient after securing the highest number of nominations and votes in the North-West category.
Mr Okusaga said the selection followed an extensive nomination and public voting process, after which the Times Heroes Award Council and other stakeholders confirmed the governor’s selection.
“Following an extensive nomination and public voting process, you received the highest number of votes in this award category.
“The Times Heroes Award Council and other key stakeholders subsequently confirmed your selection in recognition of your leadership, public service, and contribution to national development,” he said.
The award ceremony formed part of a series of activities organised to celebrate the centenary of Daily Times, which was first published in 1926.
Over the past century, the newspaper has chronicled major political, economic, social and cultural developments in Nigeria, documenting events and personalities that have shaped the country’s history.
In his reaction, Governor Lawal expressed appreciation to the board and management of Daily Times Nigeria, the organising committee of the DTN@100 celebration, members of the Times Heroes Award Council and Nigerians who supported his nomination.
The governor said the recognition reinforced his commitment to good governance and effective public service in Zamfara State.
He dedicated the honour to the people of Zamfara State, saying it would further encourage his administration to sustain its efforts toward improving governance and advancing development in the state.
Other prominent Nigerians honoured at the ceremony included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, and former President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina.
The organisers also announced that recipients of the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards would be featured among the individuals and institutions recognised in the 700-page Nigerian Grand Book.
According to the newspaper, the publication is designed as a national commemorative volume documenting the people, institutions and achievements that have contributed to Nigeria’s development.
The organisers said the book would serve as a lasting record of the country’s journey and the contributions of individuals and institutions to its progress.
The foreword to the Nigerian Grand Book was written by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The award comes amid efforts by the Lawal administration to project its governance achievements and reform agenda, particularly in areas of public service delivery and development in Zamfara State.
