Six members of a family were found dead after a domestic dispute in the US city of Muscatine, Iowa, police said. Police officers were called to a house shortly after midday following reports of a shooting.
When they arrived, they found four people inside the home with gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Police quickly identified the suspected shooter as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, from Muscatine.
According to investigators, McFarland had left the property before officers arrived.
Police launched a search for McFarland and soon located him. “While talking to Ryan Willis McFarland, he took his own life,” Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies said at a press briefing.
Officers and emergency workers tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two More Victims Discovered
As the investigation continued, police found evidence suggesting there were more victims. Officers later discovered two other men dead from apparent gunshot wounds at a second home and at a local business.
Authorities said both deaths were connected to the same investigation.
Domestic Dispute Believed to Be Cause
The shootings resulted in seven deaths in total, including McFarland. Chief Kies said early findings suggest the violence was linked to a domestic dispute. Police believe all of the victims were related to McFarland.
The deaths have deeply affected the community of Muscatine, a city of around 23,000 people on the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.
“Today I simply do not have the words — this act of evil and what it has done to our community,” the police chief said.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims because family members are still being informed.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
