Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon stirred up a lively online conversation after revealing on the May 8 edition of the Tea With Tay podcast that he would have no problem becoming a stay-at-home husband if his wife Damilola’s business brought in between $1 million and $10 million annually.
The actor, who has been married to Damilola since 2013 and is a father of three young boys, said he would willingly take on household responsibilities under such circumstances even admitting that he does not know how to cook.
He made clear, however, that his comment was only half in jest.
Okanlawon, who prior to his acting career once sold bread to make ends meet, used the opportunity to share a broader perspective on marriage, stressing that couples should focus on complementing each other and adding value to the family unit rather than turning income into a competition between spouses.
The remarks quickly drew a wave of reactions online.
Many viewers applauded his open-minded and progressive take on gender roles within marriage, seeing it as a refreshing departure from conventional expectations.
Others responded with humor, poking fun at the practical realities of a man running a household without cooking skills.
A more critical segment of the audience, however, pushed back, arguing that his stance ran counter to the traditional expectation of the man as the primary provider in a family.
