The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, is participating alongside Heads of Disaster Management and Civil Protection Agencies from across West Africa in a high-level regional meeting aimed at addressing common disaster risks in the region.
The meeting, holding in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, is the 17th Consultation of the Regional Committee of Heads of Disaster Management and Civil Protection Agencies in West Africa (GECEAO). It is convened by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and other key international partners.
A major highlight of the ongoing engagement is the review of recent seasonal forecasts, particularly the PRESA-GG outlook released by AGRHYMET, which projects above-average rainfall across several river basins and coastal zones in West Africa. The forecast indicates an increased likelihood of widespread flooding and associated hazards during the 2026 rainy season.
The consultation provides a strategic platform for strengthening regional coordination, enhancing data and information sharing, and improving the operational capacity of member states to adopt proactive and risk-informed approaches to disaster management.
It also aims to facilitate the alignment of national disaster management frameworks with regional initiatives led by ECOWAS, particularly through its Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs (DHSA).
